The membership of HRUK is opposed to the current PASA process relating to the central procurement of implantable cardiac devices as presented in the recent tendering document.
We believe that this approach carries considerable risk and will be harmful to patient care. It will impair the future development of the NHS cardiac device service and will reduce the ability to provide a cost-effective and efficient service for patients receiving implantable devices.
We believe that an economically viable service is best provided through good practice, patient support and continuing professional development, not simply through controlling device costs alone.
We believe any tendering process must respond to local needs.
